Who needs winter tires? A frequently asked question, which mainly concerns the usefulness of winter tires as well as their efficiency. Given that the price of a set of tires is not humble, everyone would like to feel confident about their purchase, but also that they benefit significantly from such an investment.

It is perfectly natural to never use winter tires if you live in Greece. However, the mountainous areas of our country are often adorned with snow several months of the year. If you belong to them, take the opportunity and buy a good set of winter tires, which you will definitely depreciate. Driving safety is of the utmost importance, especially in areas where the snow spreads throughout your field of vision.

An alternative to winter tires are the chains, which do a fine job if you use them once in a while when you go skiing in the mountains. Also, the so-called "snow sock" is now quite common, but unfortunately it wears out relatively quickly if it does not step on snow.

What are the differences between winter and summer tires?

The main difference between winter and summer tires is mainly in the special coating material, its eraser, which does not freeze or "stick", but remains elastic and provides traction even at the lowest temperatures. In addition, the special groove of the tread includes large grooves and a large number of grooves in order to drain water and melted snow without reducing the overall stiffness of the tire.

How do we recognize a winter tire?

Recognition is not particularly difficult, as the engraving of the sole allows us to theoretically distinguish it easily. But what shines is not always gold. The only official guarantee that the tire is winter is the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake) inscription on its sides. The M + S (Mud and Snow) marking is not sufficient, as it can refer to an all-terrain tire and mainly to a dirt tire, without the special snow tire rubber.

Can we move with winter tires and summer?

Theoretically, there is no problem. However, during periods when it is quite hot (a not at all unlikely scenario for our country), the tire will be damaged, especially if we drive fast.

Four-wheel drive (4x4) cars need winter tires;

Contrary to popular belief among 4x4 drivers, all-wheel drive also needs winter tires. Not only that, but also because of their heavy weight compared to regular passenger cars, they have extra risks especially in braking.
